why Brighton

Brighton the place to be...

My idea is to interview people who have relocated to Brighton.
Find out what it was that drew them here and holds them here.
Brighton seems to seems to be a place that attracts people from all over the world.

I want to  interview People from all levels of society, from City Bankers to Homeless people.
What I'm going to do is document the various reasons why people come and make this city their home.
From it's historical roots, Brighton has been a place that draws people in for holidays or relaxing weekends. Some people come to Brighton and never leave,  WHY?
What I'm looking for is testimonies of people's physical and mental journeys to Brighton.

Questions
1. Interview people from all levels of Brighton society
2. What do you miss about your home town?
3. What was it about Brighton that made you move here?
4. When did you leave your home town?
5. How did you travel to Brighton?
6.How has Brighton changed since you've been here?

My project will form a database that will be interactive, entertaining and informative.

Hi David,

You are in a position to get some excellent material for this project. You need to watch, though, that is doesn't come across like a interactive government survey or museum interpretation panel.

I'd suggest focussing on the personal, perhaps comparing the physical journey people took to get to brighton with the emotional/mental journey that brought them here (and once they were here).

It might also be nice to present the piece initially as a faceless formal survey but then subvert this by showing videos of the real people behind the facts and figures.

I think after our chat today you have plenty to think about...good luck!

We spoke in more depth about this last time we discussed. Am looking forward to see how things have progressed. From the point of view of your writing it would be useful to consider the analogies with Web 2.0 and Social Networking Sites in more depth, Why might individuals visit a particular location in Second Life or buy land in a particular place? What criteria come into play? Are these analogies between real ‘limited’ space and apparently unlimited virtual space really (if you’ll excuse the pun) valid?

In terms of your wider research it would be interesting to look at anthropology, consider geography (the subject), the history of migration, immigration, emigration. What are the differences between voluntary movements of people or peoples and forced migration? Pull and push mechanisms are at play. On-line one presumes the former is more important, individuals are drawn to new locations. Is it repugnant in some way to be making these comparisons between what appears to be a more trivial instance of virtual migration with real movement.

Maybe it is worth considering the writings and opinions of groups or individuals who do not locate themselves in a particular place, the nomadic idea too. Possibly it is obscure to mention individual and influential characters such as Victor Serge or Lev Manovich himself and whether their personal outlook and theories are influenced by their habitation of radically different locations.

It seems to me that this is a very rich subject for research. Maybe the texts you cite are not ‘the usual subjects’ for those studying media art but perhaps you could investigate the traditional material too. Talk to you more soon. I’ll set my Blog up so that I ’follow’ yours. Could you start providing more frequent entries, updates? Also it would be useful if you began to feed comments into the Blogs of fellow students, peers and called for others to look at yours.
